CCTV Camera Not Working? 10 Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Before You Call a Technician — Try These First

90% of CCTV problems that result in service calls are caused by one of ten simple issues — most of which you can diagnose and fix yourself in under 15 minutes. Our CCTVPROS technicians in Kottayam have compiled this troubleshooting guide from thousands of service calls across Kottayam, Changanacherry, Pala, Ettumanoor, and Vaikom.

Work through this list in order — start with the simplest checks before assuming hardware failure.

Problem 1 — Black Screen / No Signal on Monitor

What you see: The monitor shows "No Signal", a black rectangle, or "Video Loss" on one or more camera channels.

Common causes and fixes:

  1. Loose coaxial cable at the DVR — Open the DVR cabinet and push each BNC connector firmly into its port. A loose BNC is by far the most common cause of Video Loss on DVR systems. You should feel a firm click when the connector is fully seated.
  2. Faulty BNC connector — If a BNC looks slightly corroded or the centre pin is bent, replace the BNC connector. A bad crimp is one of the most common post-installation failure points.
  3. Camera power failure — Check that the camera's LED status light is on. If not, check the power supply unit (PSU). Most 4-camera systems use a single 12V PSU with multiple output ports — test each port with a multimeter.
  4. Wrong video input format — If a new camera was connected, check that the DVR's input format (HDCVI, AHD, TVI, or CVBS) matches the camera's output format. Go to DVR Settings → Channel → Video Format and try switching.

Problem 2 — Camera Image Blurry or Out of Focus

What you see: The image exists but looks soft, foggy, or permanently blurry.

Fixes:

  • Dirty dome cover — wipe the inside and outside of the dome bubble with a microfibre cloth. Fingerprints from installation or dust accumulation on the inside of the dome are a very common cause of soft images.
  • Varifocal lens needs adjustment — if your camera has a motorised varifocal lens (zoom ring), access the camera's web interface and use the Focus adjustment, or open the camera housing and adjust the manual focus ring.
  • IR reflection — at night, if the camera is mounted close to a white wall or ceiling (within 30 cm), IR light reflects back and washes out the image. Reposition the camera away from highly reflective surfaces.
  • Lens condensation — sudden temperature changes (like monsoon rains in Kerala) can cause condensation inside non-weatherproofed cameras. This usually clears when temperature stabilises, but indicates the camera seal needs replacing.

Problem 3 — Camera Not Showing at Night (No Night Vision)

What you see: Camera works well in daylight but shows a completely black image at night.

Fixes:

  • IR LEDs failed — Look directly at the camera at night (carefully). If you can see a faint red glow from the camera's ring of small LEDs, the IR is working. No glow indicates IR LED failure — camera needs to be replaced or the IR board replaced.
  • Day/Night mode not set to auto — Check camera settings. The ICR (Infrared Cut filter) must be set to Auto so it switches to night mode when light levels drop. If it's stuck in "Day" mode, it will block the IR spectrum.
  • Insufficient power for IR — IR LEDs draw more current than the camera's base operation. If the PSU is undersized or the cable is too long (causing voltage drop), IR may not activate fully. Test with a PSU closer to the camera.

Problem 4 — DVR Not Recording / Hard Disk Error

What you see: Playback shows no footage for recent dates, or the DVR displays a storage error message.

Fixes:

  • Hard disk not initialised — After replacing a hard disk, it must be initialised in the DVR's storage settings before recording begins. Go to Menu → Storage → HDD Management and initialise the disk.
  • Hard disk full with overwrite disabled — Check DVR storage settings. "Overwrite" should be enabled so that old footage is automatically deleted when the disk is full. Without overwrite, recording stops when the disk fills.
  • Hard disk failure — Desktop HDDs used in DVRs fail within 6–12 months due to continuous write cycles. Always use surveillance-grade drives (WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk). Check disk health in DVR HDD Status menu.
  • Schedule not set — Verify that the recording schedule is configured. DVRs default to "No Recording" on some channels or time slots after a factory reset.

Problem 5 — Remote Viewing Not Working on Mobile

What you see: The Hik-Connect or DMSS app shows the camera as "offline" even though the DVR is on.

Fixes:

  • DVR not connected to internet — Check the LAN cable between your DVR and router. Open the DVR network settings and verify the IP address is assigned (not 0.0.0.0). Try pinging the router from the DVR's network test menu.
  • Hik-Connect not enabled on DVR — Go to DVR Menu → Network → Advanced Settings → Platform Access (or Hik-Connect) and ensure it is enabled. Note the device serial number from this screen — you'll need it to re-add in the app.
  • Mobile app needs re-login — Log out of Hik-Connect and log back in. Sometimes authentication tokens expire and the app shows devices as offline even when the DVR is online.
  • ISP blocked P2P ports — Some ISPs in Kerala block outbound ports required for P2P camera connections. Use a different network (mobile data) to test. If it works on mobile data but not home WiFi, port forwarding or a VPN is needed.

Problem 6 — Pink or Purple Tinted Video

What you see: The video image has a pink, purple, or magenta colour cast.

Fix: This is almost always caused by a failed ICR (Infrared Cut filter). The ICR is a small motorised filter that physically moves in front of the sensor in daylight to block IR wavelengths. When the ICR motor fails, the IR light hits the sensor and creates the pink tint. The camera needs to be replaced or the ICR assembly serviced. This is very common after 3–5 years of use in humid Kerala conditions.

Problem 7 — Flickering or Unstable Image

What you see: The image flickers, rolls, or has horizontal bars moving across it.

Fixes:

  • Power supply voltage fluctuation — Kerala's power grid can experience voltage fluctuations, especially during load-shedding transitions. Connect the DVR's PSU through a stabiliser or UPS.
  • Coaxial cable too close to AC power wiring — Electromagnetic interference from 230V AC cables running parallel to coax causes rolling bars. Reroute the coaxial cable away from AC power wiring or use shielded cable.
  • Loose ground connection — Grounding issues in the electrical installation can cause image instability. Have an electrician check the earthing at your distribution board.

Problem 8 — Camera Showing Wrong Date and Time

What you see: Footage timestamp shows the wrong date/time, making it useless as evidence.

Fix: Set the DVR time manually to IST (Indian Standard Time = UTC +5:30) in Menu → System → Time. Enable NTP (Network Time Protocol) if your DVR is internet-connected — this keeps the time automatically synchronised. Check that the DVR's internal CMOS battery is not dead (a dead battery causes time to reset to a default date after every power outage).

Problem 9 — Colour Washed Out in Bright Sunlight

What you see: Camera pointed at an entrance or outdoor area overexposes whenever sunlight enters directly, washing out faces.

Fix: Enable WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) in the camera's image settings. WDR balances exposure across bright and dark areas in the same frame. On Hikvision cameras, go to Configuration → Image → Exposure → WDR and enable it. Alternatively, reposition the camera to avoid direct backlight — mounting under an overhang facing inward is ideal for entrance cameras.

Problem 10 — Camera Works But Won't Record Audio

What you see: Video footage records but there is no audio.

Fixes:

  • DVR audio input not connected — Analog DVR systems require a separate audio cable (not the coaxial video cable) to the DVR's audio input jack. Most budget installs skip this connection.
  • Audio not enabled in recording settings — Go to DVR → Channel → Record and enable the Audio toggle for each channel.
  • IP camera microphone disabled — For IP cameras, check the camera's web interface under Audio settings and ensure the microphone is enabled and the input gain is not at zero.

When to Call CCTVPROS

If you've worked through the above and the problem persists, it's time for a technician. Common hardware failures that require professional service include:

  • Failed IR LED board (camera shows nothing at night after IR check confirms no red glow)
  • Failed ICR filter (persistent pink/purple tint)
  • Hard disk failure confirmed in DVR health status
  • Lightning-damaged DVR or cameras (common after monsoon storms in Kerala)
  • Corroded cable joints in underground conduit runs

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common causes are: (1) loose BNC connector at the DVR port, (2) camera power failure, (3) broken coaxial cable or bad crimp connector. Check the BNC connectors first — push them firmly into the DVR ports. This fixes the majority of 'No Signal' issues.

Check the dome cover for fingerprints or dust (wipe with a microfibre cloth). If a varifocal camera, adjust the focus ring. At night, check for IR reflection off nearby white walls or surfaces. Persistent blur may indicate lens condensation or a damaged sensor.

Verify the DVR is connected to the internet (check LAN cable and network settings). Ensure Hik-Connect / Platform Access is enabled in DVR network settings. Try logging out and back in to the app. Some Kerala ISPs block P2P ports — test on mobile data to confirm.

A pink/purple tint is caused by a failed ICR (Infrared Cut filter). The filter normally blocks infrared light in daytime — when it fails, IR light creates a colour cast. The camera needs the ICR assembly replaced or the unit needs to be replaced.

Check: (1) Is the hard disk initialised in DVR storage settings? (2) Is Overwrite enabled so old footage is deleted when disk is full? (3) Is the recording schedule configured? (4) Has the hard disk failed? Check HDD status in the DVR storage menu.

Flickering is usually caused by power supply voltage fluctuation, coaxial cable running parallel to AC power wiring (electromagnetic interference), or a loose ground connection. Connect the DVR PSU through a stabiliser and reroute coaxial cables away from AC wiring.

Set the time manually in DVR Menu → System → Time to IST (UTC+5:30). Enable NTP for automatic sync if internet-connected. If time resets after every power cut, the CMOS battery on the DVR board is dead and needs replacement.
