How to View CCTV on Your Mobile Phone in 2025 — Step-by-Step Guide

Remote CCTV Viewing — The Basics

Modern DVRs and NVRs from Hikvision, Dahua, and CP Plus all support free remote viewing via smartphone apps. Once set up correctly, you can watch live camera feeds, review recorded footage, receive motion alerts, and even rewind and export clips — all from your phone, anywhere in the world.

This guide from CCTVPROS covers the setup process for the three most common systems installed in Kottayam and Kerala homes and businesses.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your DVR or NVR connected to a router via Ethernet cable (the LAN port on the back of the DVR)
  • The router connected to an active internet connection (broadband or 4G/5G router)
  • The DVR's serial number (printed on a sticker on the DVR body or available in DVR Menu → System → Device Info)
  • A smartphone (Android or iOS) with the relevant app installed

Most modern Hikvision and Dahua DVRs use P2P (Peer-to-Peer) cloud connectivity — this means you don't need to know your home's IP address, set up port forwarding, or configure a DDNS service. The DVR registers with the manufacturer's cloud server and your phone connects to it through the cloud. Setup takes under 5 minutes.

Method 1 — Hikvision: Hik-Connect App

Hik-Connect is Hikvision's official remote viewing app, available free for Android and iOS.

Step 1 — Enable Hik-Connect on the DVR

  1. On the DVR, go to: Menu → Configuration → Network → Advanced Settings → Platform Access
  2. Tick "Enable" and select "Hik-Connect" as the platform
  3. Set a verification code (6+ characters — remember this, you'll need it in the app)
  4. Click Apply and Save
  5. The "Status" should change to "Online" within 30 seconds if your DVR is connected to the internet

Step 2 — Create a Hik-Connect Account

  1. Download "Hik-Connect" from Google Play or Apple App Store
  2. Open the app and tap "Register" — register with your mobile number or email
  3. Verify your account via the OTP sent to your phone

Step 3 — Add Your DVR

  1. Tap the "+" button in the top right corner
  2. Choose "Scan QR Code" — point your phone camera at the QR code shown on the DVR's Platform Access screen, OR choose "Manual Entry" and type the Device Serial Number
  3. Enter the verification code you set in Step 1
  4. Tap "Add" — the DVR appears in your device list

Step 4 — View Live Cameras

  1. Tap your DVR in the device list
  2. Tap the camera preview thumbnails to open live view
  3. Tap multiple thumbnails to view up to 4 cameras simultaneously
  4. Swipe left/right to navigate through all channels

To enable push notifications for motion alerts, go to the device settings in Hik-Connect and enable "Motion Detection Notification". You'll receive an instant alert with a snapshot whenever motion is detected.

Method 2 — Dahua: DMSS App

DMSS (DSS Mobile) is Dahua's official app, available free on Android and iOS.

Step 1 — Enable P2P on Dahua DVR/NVR

  1. Go to: Main Menu → Network → P2P
  2. Tick "Enable" — the status should show "Online" if internet is connected
  3. Note the Serial Number (SN) shown on this screen

Step 2 — Add Device in DMSS

  1. Download "DMSS" from app stores
  2. Create a Dahua account and log in
  3. Tap "+" → "SN/Scan" and scan the QR code shown on the P2P screen, or enter the SN manually
  4. Enter the device login password (default is usually blank or "admin" — change this immediately!)
  5. Tap "Save" — device appears in your list

Method 3 — CP Plus: CWMS / gCMOB App

CP Plus systems use the gCMOB app (also branded as CWMS on some regional variants).

  1. Go to DVR Menu → Network → Easy4IP and enable it
  2. Download gCMOB from app stores
  3. Register and log in
  4. Tap "+" and scan the QR code from the DVR screen or enter the serial number
  5. Enter the device password to complete registration

Troubleshooting Common Remote Viewing Problems

Device Shows as "Offline" in the App

  • Verify the LAN cable between DVR and router is firmly connected and the router's LAN indicator light for that port is on
  • Check DVR network settings — IP address must not be 0.0.0.0 (go to Menu → Network → TCP/IP)
  • Confirm Platform Access / P2P status on the DVR shows "Online" — if it shows "Offline", the DVR cannot reach the internet
  • Try restarting the router and DVR in sequence: router first, wait 2 minutes, then DVR

Video Loads but Lags or Freezes

  • Switch to "Sub Stream" quality in the app — sub stream uses significantly less bandwidth than main stream. For remote viewing over mobile data, sub stream (typically 512 kbps–1 Mbps) is almost always sufficient.
  • Check your internet upload speed at the DVR location — remote viewing requires upload bandwidth from the DVR's side. A minimum of 2 Mbps upload is recommended for 4 cameras at sub stream.
  • On Jio or BSNL broadband in rural Kerala areas, upload speeds can be very low during peak hours. Early morning and late night viewing will be smoother.

App Works on Wi-Fi But Not on Mobile Data

Some ISPs and mobile networks in India use Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) which blocks P2P connections. This is common with Jio SIM cards in some areas. Try a different mobile network (Airtel, BSNL) or contact us — we can configure port forwarding through your router as an alternative to P2P for more reliable connectivity.

Forgot Verification Code / Device Password

If you've forgotten the Hik-Connect verification code, you can reset it in the DVR's Platform Access settings — generate a new code and re-add the device in the app. For a forgotten DVR admin password, a factory reset is required (this erases recordings). Call CCTVPROS at +91 75999 85666 — our technicians can sometimes recover access without a full factory reset using the Hikvision SADP tool.

Best Practices for Mobile CCTV Viewing

  • Change the default DVR password immediately — "admin/admin" or "admin/12345" DVRs are regularly compromised by internet bots. Use a strong unique password.
  • Use sub stream for regular monitoring — main stream is only needed when examining fine detail. Sub stream saves bandwidth and battery on your phone.
  • Enable motion alerts selectively — enabling motion alerts on all 8 cameras will flood your phone with notifications. Enable only on entry points (gate, door).
  • Check your DVR's date/time regularly — remote footage review with an incorrect timestamp is useless for evidence. Set NTP sync in DVR network settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use the Hik-Connect app (free on Android and iOS). Download it from the Play Store or App Store, create a free account, and add your DVR/NVR using the serial number or by scanning the QR code shown in the DVR's Platform Access settings.

Use the DMSS app (also called DSS Mobile) — free on Android and iOS. Enable P2P in the Dahua DVR/NVR settings, then add the device to DMSS using the serial number.

No. Modern Hikvision, Dahua, and CP Plus DVRs use P2P cloud connectivity — you just need the DVR connected to the internet and the serial number to add it in the app. Port forwarding is only needed as an alternative when P2P is blocked by your ISP.

Check: (1) LAN cable between DVR and router is connected, (2) DVR has a valid IP address in its network settings, (3) Platform Access / P2P is enabled in the DVR settings and shows Online. Restart the router and DVR in sequence (router first) if the issue persists.

Some mobile networks use CGNAT which blocks P2P connections. This is common with Jio in some areas. Try a different network (Airtel, BSNL) or configure port forwarding on your router as an alternative. Contact CCTVPROS for assistance.

Sub stream viewing requires 512 kbps–1 Mbps per camera. For 4 cameras simultaneously, 4 Mbps download on your phone and 2 Mbps upload at the DVR location is recommended. Main stream requires 3–8 Mbps per camera and is only needed for detailed examination.

Yes. Both Hik-Connect (Hikvision) and DMSS (Dahua) support push notifications with snapshots when motion is detected. Enable Motion Detection Notification in the device settings within the app. We recommend enabling alerts only on entry point cameras to avoid excessive notifications.
